Bayard is the Director of ECOHOST – the Centre for Health and Social Change. His research addresses the health determinants, policies and systems of countries in transition such as conflict-affected and fragile states or those in the former Soviet Union. This research has focused particularly on mental health, other non-communicable diseases, and harmful health behaviours – particularly tobacco and harmful alcohol use.
His recently completed projects include: a study on determinants of mental health of internally displaced persons in Georgia; a systematic review evaluating public health research priorities in humanitarian crises; and a study on economic crises and health resilience. His previous research has included projects on: trends in health and harmful health behaviours in the former Soviet Union; developing and validating a new method to estimate mortality in conflict-affected and resource-poor settings; and the influence of armed conflict and forced migration on mental health in South Sudan and northern Uganda.
Prior to joining LSHTM he was involved in supporting reproductive health and HIV/AIDS programmes in Afghanistan, Nepal, Pakistan, and Uganda amongst others.
He is an Editor-in-Chief of the BMC journal Conflict and Health and jointly established the LSHTM Health in Humanitarian Crises Centre.
