Rick Dickinson

Role: Expert Panellist
Affiliation: Dickinson Associates Cambridge

Industrial designer to Sir Clive Sinclair, Rick designed products such as the ZX81, Spectrum, QL, and Z88 computers and the worlds first pocket TV. Rick set up his own design practice in 1987 in order to access a wider range of design needs including medical devices. In 1989 Rick met Dr John MacArthur and re-designed his miniature microscope for mass production. This eventually led to Rick designing, manufacturing, and marketing a range of miniature field microscopes culminating in the powerful Newton, used extensively by Malaria field researchers. In every case Rick ensured that image capture was a crucial design capability.
