Professor Andrew Hayward is Head of the University College London Department of Health Informatics based at the Farr Institute of Health Informatics. Andrew is trained in Public Health Medicine and Epidemiology. His department conducts a broad range of research utilising Electronic Health Records and health informatics technologies to understand and improve the management and control of infections.
He is Chief Investigator of a randomised controlled trial of the use of a smart phone app to support adherence to tuberculosis treatment. To prevent relapse and the development of drug resistant disease the World Health Organisation recommend that tuberculosis is observed by a health care worker or other responsible adult (Directly Observed Therapy – DOT). The smart phone facilitates this process by allowing patients to send in video clips of their daily treatment (Video Observed Therapy) rather than needing to have treatment observed face to face.
